need the ability to control API visibility explicitly.

visibility-defines-1.patch

adds _X_EXPORT, _X_HIDDEN, and _X_INTERNAL for gcc and sun c.  icc support
should
be similar to gcc if i could figure out what versions supported the appropriate
attributes.
