Description Rena Kunisaki 2011-01-29 20:44:45 UTC
Install Nouveau, open Gimp, start working. Your GPU will lock up within minutes. No other application appears to cause this. Keyboard also seems to be locked up except Alt+SysRq. SSH still works.

Device: nVidia GeForce 6200 OC (AGP), using DVI and VGA outputs.

Downloaded and compiled the driver from Git with 3D support; using Compiz. (Hopefully you're not just going to dismiss this without even looking at it because "lol 3D not supported sry"? At least instructions on how to gather more useful information would be nice...)

Kernel log from GPU lockup

This appears to be the a partial kernel log around the time of the crash. I will try to get a complete log next time it happens - what files should I be concerned with?

System log

OK, here's a complete system log, from when it booted to when the GPU locked up. Unfortunately doesn't look like it contains the actual crash, whereas the partial log (attachment 42730 [details]) does.

This crash was caused by opening a large image in Gimp (3600x1080) and moving a large layer (1680x1050) at 50% zoom. It locked up midway through redrawing the moving layer. The keyboard also stops responding.

This crash doesn't appear to happen if Compiz is not running. Perhaps Gimp is doing some sort of 3D accelerated blit when it detects a compositing window manager?

Kernel log

Here is the corresponding kernel log.

screenshot of graphics buffer problem with firefox

Attached is a screenshot of a graphics buffer problem that shows up in Firefox.
Random blocks from the screen show up in the middle of Firefox windows when I scroll or my mouse hits some sensitive part of the screen.

Firefox 4.0.1, Fedora 15 2.6.38.8-32.fc15.x86_64

screenshot of graphics buffer problem with gimp

Attached is a screenshot of a Gimp (2.6.11) window. The actual image is the previous attachment, but the display shows random blocks of garbage outside the "view" of the image. (You can see some of the dashed line around where the "image" is inside the gimp window.)

The garbage blocks show up (and sometimes disappear and sometimes disappear) when scrolling and zooming.

It appears that this bug report has laid dormant for quite a while. Sorry we haven't gotten to it. Since we fix bugs all the time, chances are pretty good that your issue has been fixed with the latest software. Please give it a shot. (Linux kernel 3.10.7, xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.9, mesa 9.1.6, or their git versions.) If upgrading to the latest isn't an option for you, your distro's bugzilla is probably the right destination for your bug report.

In an effort to clean up our bug list, we're pre-emptively closing all bugs that haven't seen updates since 2011. If the original issue remains, please make sure to provide fresh info, see http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/Bugs/ for what we need to see, and re-open this one.

Thanks,

The Nouveau Team
