When dragging the tiny autofill box from a single cell, Calc currently allows only single-column or single-row fills. I propose that Calc allow autofill to expand in two dimensions like a selection box. The choice of filling downwards or rightwards can be based on whether the first column or first row is mostly-blank or not, or which contains the more autofillable materials like formulas rather than text. For some eye candy to show the user what the computer will do, a transparent arrow could be overlaid on the selected area to show the fill direction when there is more than one column and row selected. A question mark can be shown if Calc is unsure what to do.
