See also bug 3228, where int10 card initialization fail for a radeon card when 
using 64-bit kernel & binaries on amd64. 

As I have both a matrox g550 (agp) and a radeon 9200SE pci I decided to try 
things the other way around, that is, let the bios boot initialize the radeon 
(instead of the matrox) and try to have the int10 driver in xorg bring up the 
matrox card.  

This failed, int10 did not work. The log shows that much of the g550 resources 
were autodetected anyway, but not enough.  For example, I got 2048k of memory 
instead of 32768k, and the video mode was something the flat panel couldn't 
handle so I had to reset the pc.

I wonder if the int10 trouble on amd64 isn't limited to particular drivers, I 
guess it is generic.  At least it fails on two different drivers.

hm, you really shouldn't be using linux/libint10 on amd64.  try renaming
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/linux/libint10.a to something else so that the loader
picks up the other libint10.a.

The one under linux/ is an interface to the vm86(2) syscall which only works on
real x86; the other one is a full x86 emulator.

Thanks ajax, that helped a lot!  (Haven't tested it with the g550 yet, but it 
definitely managed to initialize the pci radeon 9200 SE).  

This is a nice workaround, one question remains.  Is the distribution in error 
for distributing an amd64 binary with this file?  (Should I report bugs to 
debain and ubuntu?) Or is xorg in error for using it when it won't work, or was 
it supposed to work, an amd64 is supposed to be backward compatible with ia32.

int10 is known to be broken.
Can you try last patch at bug #2880 ?

See also bug 3228, where int10 card initialization fail for a radeon card when 
using 64-bit kernel & binaries on amd64. 

As I have both a matrox g550 (agp) and a radeon 9200SE pci I decided to try 
things the other way around, that is, let the bios boot initialize the radeon 
(instead of the matrox) and try to have the int10 driver in xorg bring up the 
matrox card.  

This failed, int10 did not work. The log shows that much of the g550 resources 
were autodetected anyway, but not enough.  For example, I got 2048k of memory 
instead of 32768k, and the video mode was something the flat panel couldn't 
handle so I had to reset the pc.

I wonder if the int10 trouble on amd64 isn't limited to particular drivers, I 
guess it is generic.  At least it fails on two different drivers.
