I freshly installed gentoo on HP elitebook 8540w with Nvidia Quadro FX1800 graphics card and 1920x1080 LCD. Nouveau driver from linux-2.6.37-gentoo-r1 nor linux-2.6.38-rc7-git4 works: I get a moving mouse pointer on "random" pixels background. There might be several problems, since the proprietary Nvidia driver does not work with the built-in LCD, but works with external displayport/dvi monitors. Nouveau does fails in the same way on external monitor. Windows works, the hardware is OK. I have first reported this bug at gentoo bugzilla, cf. http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=357763 where I have attached config and log files, so I do not repeat them here at the moment, I can do it upon request.
If I give up hardware acceleration, with nouveau.noaccel=1 it works, also with external DVI monitor.
I have the same problem with exactly the same hardware. I'm running Ubuntu desktop 10.10 64bit.
Created attachment 44716 [details] dmesg output while mouse pointer on external monitor disappears There is another bug which presents itself even with nouveau.noaccel=1, if an external DP monitor is attached. I have 1920x1200 external DVI monitor with DVI/DP adater. Irregularly, after 2-5 hours, the mouse pointer disappears from the external monitor, but remains on the builtin display (movable). Simple restart of X server (/etc/init.d/xdm restart) does not help. Switching to text console ctrl-alt-F1 does not work either. Dmesg contains nouveau error reports, cf. attachment.

It appears that this bug report has laid dormant for quite a while. Sorry we haven't gotten to it. Since we fix bugs all the time, chances are pretty good that your issue has been fixed with the latest software. Please give it a shot. (Linux kernel 3.10.7, xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.9, mesa 9.1.6, or their git versions.) If upgrading to the latest isn't an option for you, your distro's bugzilla is probably the right destination for your bug report. In an effort to clean up our bug list, we're pre-emptively closing all bugs that haven't seen updates since 2011. If the original issue remains, please make sure to provide fresh info, see http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/Bugs/ for what we need to see, and re-open this one. Thanks, The Nouveau Team
