Description Dominique De Vito 2011-03-17 06:55:34 UTC
JavaScript has more and more potential every day.
And these days, it is more and more central for browser add-on development: it's possible to develop add-ons for Google Chrome, and Firefox (through JetPack), while using only HTML + CSS + JavaScript technologies.

While the JavaScript community is huge, there is a great potential to use JavaScript for defining LibreOffice add-ons. AFAIK, it was already possible to define OpenOffice add-ons using JavaScript, but to achieve an even greater potential, there is a need (IMHO) to make JavaScript a more first-class citizen language into LibreOffice.

IMHO, this goal leads to the following path:

* include a powerful JavaScript engine, like V8, into LibreOffice.

* give access to the data of Calc, Write... through a DOM like JavaScript's API enabling to manipulate such data (and more, to manipulate the data's structure).

* publish all the JavaScript methods on the website through some javadoc style organization

* include a XMLHttpRequest object into the JS LibreOffice environment (that is, as one of the objects available, into the environment, during JavaScript execution)

* provide a clearer documentation than OpenOffice about howto write/develop extensions (I have bad user experience about OpenOffice extension docs...).

These steps could be able to bring the JavaScript community towards the LibreOffice community, and may be too the Java community (as GWT provides a Java/JavaScript cross-compiler). Furthermore, it would be an important step to fill the gap between online/offline office user experiences and developer experiences.

My 2 cents.
