i'm guessing about the hal component. A Zip-100 drive is detected and appears
in fstab as:

/dev/hdc4 /media/zip auto pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0

every attempt to mount a Zip disk, that is formatted as vfat, returns this error
message:

"you must specify filesystem type"

'User Mount Tool - Format' doesn't do anything with Zip disks. Floppy drives
are formattable.

"mount -t vfat /dev/hdc4 /media/zip" returns the message:

"special device /dev/hdc4 does not exist"

both floppy drive and CD-Rom auto-mount normally and files are accessible there.
i'm guessing this has something to do with the storage policy, but i don't yet
know enough about the configuration to modify anything.
