screenshot of distortion: superimposed letters

I'm using Kubuntu 11.04 on an AMD Athlon X2 with an ATI Radeon 4600 graphics adapter.

When I hit Ctrl+Alt+N to insert a comment into a LibreOffice document, the comment will appear properly, and I'll be able to type into it; but, the line that I type into will be distorted. Sometimes it will have colorful static superimposed on it. Sometimes it will have letters apart from the ones I typed.

The static hangs around until I hit Enter, at which point it goes away until I type some more, at which point the new line will become staticky. Switching away from the LibreOffice window will also make the static go away.

I thought it might be related to the Desktop Effects, but the bug is the same with Desktop Effects turned off.
