See this bug as reference: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=650128 The problem is, that many desktop environments displays keyboard layout as country flag or language code of two or three letters. If user uses more than one keyboard layout of same language, then many desktop environments workarounds this issue and adds some additional symbol on top of flag or language code. For example, Gnome 2 uses this: Ltu - for default keyboard layout (Lithuania - US keyboard with Lithuanian letters) Ltuz - for second keyboard layout of same language (Lithuania - LEKP) Many languages has more than one keyboard layout, but there is no way, to show in short form those layouts... So my suggestion would be, to add reasonable short name aliases to all keyboard layouts. With this, my example above would look like this: Ltu - for default keyboard layout (Lithuania - US keyboard with Lithuanian letters) Lkp - for second keyboard layout of same language (Lithuania - LEKP) See my comment here, for more detailed explantion for these short aliases: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=650128#c7 If this problem would be solved, then desktop environments will not be forced to do workarounds for displaying keyboard layouts in short form.
Let's first discuss that in gnome's bugzilla. I am still not convinced it should be fixed in xk-c the way you proposed
