It should be relatively easy to add a page number to the document background, such that users can immediately see on which page they are. Please see the mockup by Mirek2 at http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/cgi_img_auth.php/b/b4/Citrus.png . Note however, that the scope of this bug is only the page number, not the rest of the design. Ideally, a page number would be displayed to the left (for rtl locales to the right) of top of every page and should be of a grey that is slightly darker than the document background itself, use the UI font, but in a larger size (~16pt). If this change goes well with users, it could be propagated to Impress and Draw.
Of course that can be done. But what's the advantage compared with the page no information in the status bar?
