Description Paul Boddie 2005-08-13 00:40:08 UTC
If I open the given Web site (http://www.8bs.com) in Konqueror in Kubuntu
(kdebase 3.4.0-0ubuntu18, linux-386 2.6.10-7), it brings down my X server
(xorg-common 6.8.2-10) and seems to upset the hardware enough to prevent the X
server from being restarted and to prevent access to consoles. If I try the
same thing in Firefox (mozilla-firefox 1.0.6-0ubuntu0.1) no such behaviour
occurs. The error text from Xorg.0.log.old is given below:

Comment 1 Paul Boddie 2005-08-13 00:44:40 UTC
Added to the Kubuntu bugzilla (http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com) as bug #13401.
Comment 2 Alan Hourihane 2005-08-13 01:04:07 UTC
You'll need to attach the full log from /var/log/Xorg.0.log so we can see
exactly what's going on.

According to the Kubuntu people, this may be a problem with the "Kaffeine xine
part" - I am investigating this now.
Comment 4 Paul Boddie 2005-08-13 23:59:49 UTC
The problem was traced to Kaffeine (kaffeine_part) which was playing an
audio/x-wav file before presumably crashing (as usual). Still, bringing down
the X server is a somewhat undesirable outcome.
Comment 5 Alan Hourihane 2005-08-14 00:03:08 UTC
Then you are probably better off getting my test driver at

http://www.fairlite.demon.co.uk/intel.html and see if that helps with the
kaffeine problems.
Comment 6 Alan Hourihane 2005-10-06 02:13:47 UTC
Paul,

Can you try my test driver and report if the problem persists ?
Comment 7 Paul Boddie 2005-10-06 05:44:24 UTC
Just attempted to test this today, but 8bs.com is down and a test page
embedding an audio/x-wav resource failed to cause kaffeine_part to behave as it
once did. I'll try and investigate this later on.
Comment 8 Alan Hourihane 2005-10-19 06:21:00 UTC
Any news ?
Comment 9 Paul Boddie 2005-10-19 07:56:02 UTC
Sorry, Alan! It appears that 8bs.com was down for a bit. Anyway, I reproduced
the fault under the existing X server and then tried with your i810_drv.o.

First, I tried just logging back in and hoping that X would use the new driver,
but the fault occurred as before - I suppose logging out and then in doesn't
reset the X server's state as much as I thought. Then, after rebooting I tried
8bs.com and the fault had apparently disappeared - I get some fairly garbled
sound resembling what the webmaster presumably intended, but everything keeps
running and the X server doesn't crash.

The only odd thing was that I needed to auto-adjust my LCD monitor after the
reboot - the image was shifted 40 or 50 pixels to the left.
Comment 10 Alan Hourihane 2005-10-29 02:48:45 UTC
Paul, Can you try my latest driver and upload another log that may fix the
offset image ?
Comment 11 Alan Hourihane 2006-01-25 04:14:21 UTC
Closing as the initial report is fixed. If you've still got problems with the
adjusted screen - open a new report. But it might be useful to upgrade to 7.0
and get my latest driver from http://www.fairlite.demon.co.uk/intel.html and try
that before opening a report.

Thanks!
