I had received a Word2007 document with extension .doc via email. Opening it resulted in a message that the document was corrupted. The fix failed. However, when changing the extension to .docx, the document opened fine. There should be no reliance on the extension to recognize a document, only on the content. Compare this to the 'file' command in Linux and it's "magic".
