With my current setup pavucontrol's main window is unwieldily large, even on a 1920x1200 desktop.

  See the first screenshot.

This is a PITA for my endusers when adjusting which o/p to direct an application to.

With the attached patch you get the second screenshot. Not elegant I know, but at least the window now fits on the screen.

Should be fixed in git with a different patch: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pavucontrol/commit/?id=35e844d2b2cf35f5a4cb29b1e32f4f1fa95dda7b

Could you please build from git and retest?
