screenshot of icon and text

Problem description:

When typing new text after removing highlighted text, the new text is highlighted with the color of the previously removed text (e.g. yellow) although the icon shows 'no fill'

Steps to reproduce:
1. highlight some text in aparagraph
2. ensure that the Highlighting icon is 'no fill'
3. remove the highlighted text (leave the paragraph)
4. Go away from the location, return to the location
5. Type new text

Current behavior:
The new text is highlighted

Expected behavior:
The new textis not highlighted

Browser: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1 Iceweasel/7.0.1

I can confirm this as a bug. It's a long-standing one at that.

If the current highlight "color" (i.e. yellow, etc, or no-fill) should be used to highlight un-highlighted text and vice versa.

Reproducible in 3.5.2 on Fedora 64 bit, but may be not a bug.
"Text color" and "Highlight color" icons not indicate color of text where cursor placed. Only "Paragraph background color" icon indicates.
In msWord 2007 the same situation. Current behaviour is reasonable and handy for many users (not all). Some additional functionality may be added, such as color pickers.

Sorry if I misunderstand problem with color icons

It took me a few times to actually get it to do what you're saying but I do see the bug. It's not a major issue but it could potentially cause an annoyance for some users.

Marking as NEW, setting priority & changing name.

Priority: Set to minor as there is an easy solution (just change the fill) but put it to high because it doesn't reflect well on LibreOffice to have the text reflect exactly what the highlight button shows

There is really one of two issues here:

1. The highlight color shouldn't actually be no fill if it's going to have a fill color

OR

2. The new typed text shouldn't have a fill

Either solutions work as they make it so that what is seen in the button for a fill color is actually the same as what is seen when you type.

** Please read this message in its entirety before responding **

To make sure we're focusing on the bugs that affect our users today, LibreOffice QA is asking bug reporters and confirmers to retest open, confirmed bugs which have not been touched for over a year.

There have been thousands of bug fixes and commits since anyone checked on this bug report. During that time, it's possible that the bug has been fixed, or the details of the problem have changed. We'd really appreciate your help in getting confirmation that the bug is still present.

If you have time, please do the following:

Test to see if the bug is still present on a currently supported version of LibreOffice (4.3.5 or later): https://www.libreoffice.org/download/

If the bug is present, please leave a comment that includes the version of LibreOffice and your operating system, and any changes you see in the bug behavior

If the bug is NOT present, please set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED-WORKSFORME and leave a short comment that includes your version of LibreOffice and Operating System

Please DO NOT

Update the version field
Reply via email (please reply directly on the bug tracker)
Set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED - FIXED (this status has a particular meaning that is not appropriate in this case)

Thank you for your help!

Really confusing repro steps, but I guess I confirm this (=highlight icon doesn't indicate anything).
Would be cool to see a video from someone who completely understands this.

The bug seems to be fixed in 4.3.5.2.
Writing between two words, where a highlighted word have been removed before, no longer highlights the new word. Same for writing on a new line after a highlighted region.

Thanks for fixing the bug!
