Description Laurens Vets 2005-09-03 08:00:16 UTC
Dear sirs,

I'm running Gentoo with Xorg 6.8.2 compiled from the Gentoo eBuild. However,
when I type startx, my whole system freezes. I was forwarded to here by the
Gentoo developers.

The Gentoo bug report: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104493

I also installed Xorg 6.8.99.15, which gave the same problem. I tried both the
vesa and the vga driver.

Do you maybe have an idea what's going on?

Information from the Gentoo bug report:
I've emerged Xorg-x11-6.8.2-r2. However, when I try to run it, it takes my
whole alpha machine down. I believe the settings in Xorg.conf are be ok.
Ferdy suggested to file a bug report.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge xorg-x11
2. configure X
3. startx

Actual Results:
My monitor goes blank, it doesn't power down though. When I do this while
connected via ssh to the machine, I loose my connection after a couple of
seconds. After that, the machine doesn't responds to ICMP echo requests either...

Expected Results:
Start and run X :)

Hardware:
Digital Personal Workstation 500a. 384 MB RAM. S3 Trio64.

/proc/pci:
  Bus 1, device 8, function 0:
    VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. 86c775/86c785 [Trio 64V2/DX or /GX] (rev 20).
      IRQ 36.
      Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xc000000 [0xfffffff].
