Created attachment 58453 [details] screenshot of Google Earth under Gnome fall-back mode The OpenGL content is not displayed correctly in Gnome fall-back mode. Only right up corner of the content is available. When the window is dragged the position of available content is fixed, and the other part keeps black or nothing. For example, when the Google Earth window is dragged to the right part of the screen there is no 3D content displayed in the window. The same problem happened with glxgears, glxspheres, etc. While glxgears can be seen when the window is inside a very small region of the left up corner of the screen, glxspheres can displayed when the window is inside a much larger part of the left up part of the screen. 1) System environment: -- chipset: Intel HD Graphics 3000 -- system architecture: x86_64 -- xf86-video-intel version: 2.18.0 xserver version: 7.6 Mesa version: 8.0.1 libdrm versoin: 2.4.31 -- kernel version: 3.2.0-18-generic -- Linux distribution: DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=12.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=precise DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu precise (development branch)" -- Machine or mobo model: Hasee K580P -- Display connector: Laptop LED 2) Reproduce steps: Just run any OpenGL program under Gnome fall-back mode or Unity 2D mode.
Please attach your Xorg.log.
Output of glxinfo would be great as well. Also, how are you getting to GNOME Fallback mode? I've only ever arrived in that environment when my 3D driver is hosed. At which point...well...bug reports don't sound very interesting. :) It sounds like you've explicitly chosen to run in fallback mode though.
Sorry, I can't find any xorg log file under /var/log/ directory. Can it be in some other place? I've installed bumblebee on my system, but I'm sure the opengl doesn't work properly without bumblebee. I use xorg.log as shorthand for /var/log/Xorg.0.log (as the '0' may be any number depending upon your configuration and login manager). Just attach the most recent of /var/log/Xorg.*.log*.
I just choose "Gnome Classic ( no effect )" in GDM login screen. In fact, most of the 3D desktops is very unstable when I run 3D applications in my computer, include Gnome 3, Gnome Classic, Unity 3D, KDE with desktop effect. So I choose Gnome fall-back mode. Though the 3d application doesn't run correctly, it is much more stable. And much more available for my work. What I must figure out is that my cpu is a i7 engineer sample with a D0 step. But I don't think it's an issue, the graphics works very well under Windows 7. for glxgears, glxspheres and 3d game like Nexuiz, It works very well when I use run it with optirun ( discrete graphic card ). But for Google Earth, it the same appearance when I put optirun before it. It's a bit strange, when I was using Ubuntu 11.10, optirun google-earth works well while it's the same issue when I run it without optirun. And for Warzone 2100 under Ubuntu 11.10 in full screen mode, it works very well even without optirun. And for VLC media player, the video output is also not correct when I choose "OpenGL GLX vidoe output". So I have to choose X11 video output, which may be slower. Ok, that's a known bug in the Option "Shadow" "true". Your driver and xserver are uptodate and should be stable without that option.
I've searched this issue for a long time, and failed to find any solution. Many thanks for your explanation. Well, for Ubuntu 12.04, the file "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" doesn't exist any more. I'll try to make a new one and switch off the "Shadow" option. It should be off by default in 2.18.0.... hmm, what have ubuntu done? After making your change, your should no longer see "(**) intel(0): Shadow buffer enabled, 2D GPU acceleration disabled." in your Xorg.0.log. Hope this helps.
Thank you. I put a new file under /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d, which content is Section "Device" Identifier "Card0" Driver "intel" Option "Shadow" "false" EndSection And as you mentioned the line of "(**) intel(0): Shadow buffer enabled, 2D GPU acceleration disabled." disappered. There is a new line: [ 26.890] (**) intel(0): Option "Shadow" "false" And the google-earth can be displayed correctly. But it seems the desktop become unstable. After I dragged the window of glxgears, the desktop stop to response, I can't move my mouse any more. And when I login to Gnome 3 desktop, it changed to fall-back mode automatically. It seems there are still some issue need to be solved. I'll keep run gnome fall-back mode with shadow enabled, and run opengl program with optirun. Still many thanks. Watch dmesg for errors, and if the GPU hangs please open a new bug report and attach the dmesg, xorg.log and /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state.
OK, I will check this later. Thank you very much. Shadow has been superseded by SNA and removed. Let me know if you encounter any further issues.. Beyond trying to use 845g in the first place.
