This problem was originally described in bug 47654 comment 3.

With synaptics-1.5.1 and X server 1.12 the pointer acceleration seems not working correctly. It is slower than it should be and it occasionally jumps across the screen.

Applying the following patch from master will fix the pointer behavior:

Yes, I confirm, fixed in version 1.5.2 along with https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47654.
