Description John Heidemann 2012-04-06 09:17:36 UTC
I'm running Xrandr with a laptop (ASUS UX31E) and external monitor
(several different Dell LCDs, connected by VGA).
In one situation described below,
removing the external monitor hangs X with a black
display.

(OS: Fedora 16, xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.11.4-2.fc16.x86_64,
xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.17.0-8.fc16.x86_64)

Hotplugging all works great, as long as the laptop is at the top-left
corner and the external monitor top-aligned in xrandr (configured with
the gnome-3 displays GUI). I.e.:

+------+-------------+
|laptop| external |
+------+ |
       | |
       +-------------+

Because the external monitor is physically flush with the bottom of
the laptop, not the top, I tried this configuration:

       +-------------+
       | |
+------+ |
|laptop| external |
+------+-------------+

where the laptop is not at the origin.

This configuration works fine when ADDING the external monitor,
but fails when the monitor is removed:
the laptop screen goes black after removing the external monitor.

Other virtual consoles are OK.

Killing Xorg recovers, but is of course painful.

Expected behavior: laptop should reconfigure back to origin after
external monitor is removed; display should not be black.

Work-around: keeping the laptop at the top-left origin seems to be
stable.

Mass closure: This bug has been untouched for more than six years, and is not obviously still valid. Please file a new report if you continue to experience issues with a current server.
