Description gherardo.carullo 2012-04-26 01:12:20 UTC
Problem description:
When copying and pasting from web sites or pdf files the process is generally slow (while the same process works fine in openoffice, if matters).
Small portion of text copied from web pages are pasted in the wrong position.
Large portion of text (those I tried where inside a table) are not pasted at all, after few seconds of loading (both processes work fine if done in Openoffice, again if this helps).
If it matters, experimental features are turned on (needed for macros)

Steps to reproduce:
1. Copy some text from a web site or a PDF, better if long and inside a table
2. Paste it
3. The text won't show.

Current behavior:
text is not pasted

Expected behavior:
text should be pasted

Platform (if different from the browser):

Browser: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; rv:11.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/11.0

Please give us the link to the webpage you try to copy-paste or attach the pdf file.

Attached you'll find a saved copy of the html page I was trying to paste from (it's a restricted access web site).
I noticed that if I try to paste in a blank document it works after quite a long time of loading (30 seconds more or less), but if the document as already some text it won't work.
Thank's so much for your support!

I was thinking that it could be the formatting (tables etc.) that takes so much time to load (and sometimes prevents pasting at all), so maybe it could be implemented a dialogbox or something similar asking whether to paste unformatted or formatted text.

Not reproducible for me with LO 3.5.5 rc0+ (Version ID : 82b89ae-a73d29c-467cd56-f269e46-616b707) under Ubuntu 11.10.
Please try again with the current release (3.5.4).

Tried again with LO 3.5.4 RC2 and I'm still having the problem.
I pasted once the text (wrapped inside a table copied from website) and, even if a bit slow, it worked. Then I tried to past another text with same formatting and it crashed.
I'll attach a file with the copied test (the one that got pasted) The first part is without formatting (removed with LO), the second part is the second text that crashed the program with original formatting (added with OO).

Test of copy / paste

The first part of the file contains the text that got pasted in LO 3.5.4 RC2 without formatting (removed with LO), the second part is the second
text that did not get pasted in LO with original formatting (added with OO after saving the file).
Comment 7 gherardo.carullo 2012-06-04 02:28:09 UTC
EDIT: Sorry my mistake, after pasting the second text LO did NOT crash! It just didn't paste anything.

FYI:
I have tried to reproduce this issue with the nice HTML sample kit (attachment 60862 [details]) and LibreOffice 3.5.5.3 (Build-ID: 7122e39-92ed229-498d286-15e43b4-d70da21; German langpack installed) on MacOS X 10.6.8 (Intel), but no success -- the text was always pasted correctly, including the surrounding table, even if there was already much text in the target .odt file. Hm ...
Comment 9 Alex Thurgood 2012-10-04 12:38:06 UTC
Tested on Mac OSX 10.8.2, with LO master build from 01/10/2012

One thing to look for is whether the HTML pages contain hyperlinks to images (I haven't checked this particular case).

When pages like this are copied into Writer, a text frame is drawn which links to the image, but the image itself doesn't load immediately, or even not at all, because it appears that LO suffers from a DNS timeout while trying to fetch the images.

You can force reload the data, but then LO just appears to sit there and do nothing.

Sample document attached.

This does show that copy and pasting work for me on OSX 10.8.2 from a website.
What doesn't work is the update of active links, or at least, it only works interminably slowly.

This is WFM, unless there is something specific about the live page that the original author is trying to copy and paste.

Just tried copy/pasting the front page of the Register.org into a Writer document. Worked fine, no lag, no delay, everything appears to be there.

I would be tempted to set this as wfm, since we now have several reports from various people who are unable to reproduce the crash.

According to Alex’ suggestion, I set the status of this bug to RESOLVED/WORKSFORME, assuming that this bug is not (longer) reproducible in current LibreOffice versions. Thank you for your understanding!

@ Everybody:
Feel free to open this bug again, if you can give us a detailed description how to reproduce it with a current version (3.5.7 or, better, >= 3.6.2) of LibreOffice, including hints to a specific web page and to the exact portion of that web page which can’t be copied/pasted into LibreOffice.

Thank you very much!
