The file to reproduce the issue (.doc file)

I observe that the width of renndered text under Ubuntu's Writer is wider than Windows's.

Expected: For the same file, rendered text under Ubuntu and Windows should be the same.

What is not tested:
- Width of text when opened with MSO 2003, MSO 2007
- Width of text when opened with other versions of LibreOffice:

- A screenshot of the .doc file when opened with LibreOffice 3.5.3.2 on Ubuntu 12.04

Is the text the same width in MSO and the windows version of LibreOffice ?
Are the same fonts available on Linux as on windows ? e.g. what does fc-match Cambria say ?

I don't understand your question fully. Can you explain what is the meaning of "width" in your sentence. What width?

>Are the same fonts available on Linux as on windows ?

Yes, DejaVuSans.ttf are available on both Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7

# By "Cambria", do you mean the name of the font (Calibri)?

vuhung@ubuntu:~$ fc-match Calibri
DejaVuSans.ttf: "DejaVu Sans" "Book"

Just compare the "g" on Linux vs the screenshot on Windows. Different fonts are used, and you cannot expect them to have equal metrics.

You need to install the same font to get the same rendering (but check the license of the font whether it is permitted)

I have uploaded the screenshots when viewing the file under

1. Windows 7, LibreOffice 3.5.4.2, Arial font and
2. Ubuntu 12.04, LibreOffice 3.5.3.2, Arial font

The widths look quite the same so if there is no objections, we can close this shame bug report :)
Comment 10 Christian Lohmaier 2012-06-19 04:44:14 UTC
thanks for the feedback, closing as not a bug.

And a hint: If you're interested in what font LibreOffice actually uses in case the originally requested one is not available, you can use export to PDF, open the PDF in a pdf-viewer and check the embedded font-info.
(as an alternative to querying fontconfig using fc-match)

Thanks for the tip.

I have a simple tip:
Move the pointer (mouse) to the text and see if the "font" dropdown under the toolbar has been switched to another font.
