Description Simon Ball 2012-07-11 11:33:06 UTC
Problem description:

Steps to reproduce:
1. ....install libreoffice - win7, 4gb ram, 1 tb harddisk, sp1
2. ....open database from main window
3. ....program cannot open, windows will search for a solution, then closes with no webpage with any help.

Now i have opened it up once via librewriter it seems to be working ok - bit disconcerting!

Current behavior:
Unable to open database unless go into writer and then select a file to open from there, then it will open
Expected behavior:Open from icon when libreoffice is started up

Platform (if different from the browser):win7

Browser: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:13.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/13.0.1: firefox 13.01

Is it a specific to 1 file ?
If you create a brand new file with Base with nothing in it (no forms, query or tables), can you reopen it from Base ?
Comment 2 Simon Ball 2012-07-11 19:26:57 UTC
Hi Julien,

I was clicking on the libreoffice icon on my desktop
then create a new database, then next, yes register the database for me
,saying open the database for editing, then finish -
save under 'new database' to desktop, then it would
crash and say it would bring up a webpage with a solution.
But it never did.
Strangely all seems to be well now though.

Once i got the file to open through going through libreoffice writer,
and then opening it there, it now seems to be fine.
I tried uninstalling libreoffice, repairing libreoffice, none of those made
any
difference initially.

All ok now,
Safe to close incident

Kind regards
Simon

Thank you for your quick reply.
It seems not reproducible so I'll put RESOLVED/WORKSFORME.

If it happens again, try the "raw method" :
- uninstall LO
- remove/backup your LO profile (http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile)
- clean your Windows registry (with a free tool like ccleaner)
- install again

If it doesn't work, you can reopen this tracker or create a new one then describe precisely the steps (to the minimum) to reproduce the problem.

I have exactly the same behavior with Version 3.5.6.2:

1. Brand new installation (Windows, German) + Built in Help (Win7, 4 GB RAM)
2. Start LibreOffice
3. In Main Window open existing Database-File
   OR
Start Writer with new File and then open exiting Database-File
   OR
Create new Database with Wizard, save File and automaticaly open the new Database
4. Base opens (you can see the start screen of Base) and crashes at once ("search for solution" ...)

There is no crash, as described by Simon, when an existing Writer-File is already open.

You said brand new installation, so does it mean you:
- uninstalled LO
- renamed/removed LO profile and some possible remnants of LO in Program Files
- cleaned your Windows registry (if you had installed previous LO or OOo versions) with free tools like ccleaner for example
- installed again
?

What's your Java version?

Could you also try 3.6.1? (I know it takes some time to uninstall and install again but it may help)
Comment 6 Klaus 2012-09-08 09:01:55 UTC
Hi Julien,

some more information:

- OS: Windows 7, 64 bit
- brand new installation means: installed version 3.5.6.2 above of 3.5.4 (so no, it is not a totally clean installation)
- Java version was 1.7.0_07
- there must be a problem with the JRE because when I click on "Tables" a message apears ("Your JRE is defect...")
- Extras -> Options -> Java: JRE 1.7.0_07 wasn't marked, so I did it (still the same behaviour)
- installed Java Version 1.6.0_35 (Windows 64 Bit) and tried this, but still the same (couldn't open "Tables")

but:
- tried the same (scenario in comment #4) on my netbook (Windows 7, 32 bit, LO 3.5.6.2, JRE 1.6.0_31): no crash, everything works fine!
- tried the same (scenario in comment #4) on my wife's laptop (Windows 7, 64 bit, LO 3.5.6.2, JRE 1.7.0_07): no crash, but message "...JRE defect..." pops up, when opening a base file
- installed LO-version 3.6.1.2 on my 64Bit-System: no crash, but the problem with the JRE (click on Tables -> message "...JRE defect..." still occurs

Kind regards,
Klaus

About Java, did you try to go to:
Tools/Options menu
LibreOffice/Advanced
Choose the right Java
?

For the test, you can also rename your LO profile (http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile) so it forces LO to retrieve the good Java?

You must know there has been a bug (which is now fixed but I don't remember which bug is it and so in which LO version it will be) concerning LO and Java.
For example, if you have Java 1.6, then install LO first time. LO detects Java 1.6
Now you upgrade to Java 1.7 then remove Java 1.6, LO was failing.
Comment 8 Klaus 2012-09-08 15:10:10 UTC
Hello Julien,

thanks for your hints: I've uninstalled all JREs and then tried Java 6 (32 Bit / 64 Bit) and 7 (32 Bit / 64 Bit). It finally worked with Java 6 (32 Bit) - the other 3 JREs don't work.

But anyway - no crash with 3.6.1, so this Bug seems to be fixed.

Kind regards,
Klaus

Klaus: great for you! I revert back to WFM. Certainly you may find a tracker about Java by searching here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/query.cgi
Rainer: what about a metabug about Java related problems? (if it already exist, I missed it)
Comment 10 Simon Ball 2012-09-10 08:28:22 UTC
Has worked fine since initial issue, issue is safe to close.

Many thanks
Simon
