Description billhook 2012-07-23 03:37:01 UTC
I just installed LO 3.6.0.2 and the install took 23 minutes.

Is this considered reasonable / acceptable performance?

Some details:

Windows Vista SP1
I chose a custom install, and installed only Calc, Writer and Impress.
My computer is not that new, but not ancient either.

Core2 Duo 2.33GHz
4GB RAM
Around 100GB free disk space.

It seemed to spend around 10 minutes "deleting backup files" or something similar.

I installed Lo 3.6.0.4 and it took almost exactly 10 minutes.

On my systems, even on 6 years old laptops, installing takes only a few seconds, or 1-2 minutes at max. I install/remove LibreOffice on a daily basis, because I need to do so as part of my job. Maybe you have a virus checker activated, or your disk is fragmented. Anyway, it is not under our control to speed up installer, we use Microsoft Installer Service.

@Andras Timar

I have Disk Defragmenter scheduled to run weekly, so I doubt disk fragmentation caused this problem.

I do have Windows Defender (anti-virus) running. Next time I install, I will turn it off and see how long the install takes.

I upgraded from 3.5.5 to 3.6.0.4.

This is on a different machine. WinXP SP3 3GB RAM. Running a different antivurus (Avira)

The whole install process took 18 minutes (this includes about 30 seconds of clicking through dialogs)

I noted down the text on the installer window along with the time since starting the installer.

Start 0:00
Computing Space requirements 2:30
Validating Install 5:05
Installing 5:30
Removing files 5:55
Removing backup files 10:05
"Status" (i.e. blank) 12:00
Copying new files 13:15
Registering product 15:30
Removing backup files 16:00
"Status" (i.e. blank) 17:45
Finished 18:00

Why are you running an antivirus during LibreOffice install? I guess you downloaded it from a trusted source. It is signed by The Document Foundation and it is virus-free. Installer contains several thousand files, and your virus scanner scans them, that takes time.

> Why are you running an antivirus during LibreOffice install?

Many antivirus programs run constantly in the background. The user doesn't consciously choose to run antivirus. You would have to consciously turn the antivirus off to *not* run it during install.

Anyway, I haven't yet established if antivirus is the problem or if it's something else causing long install times.

I tried again with Windows Defender antivirus turned OFF.

LibreOffice 3.6.1.1

Windows Vista SP1
I chose a custom install, and installed only Calc, Writer and Impress.

Core2 Duo 2.33GHz
4GB RAM
Around 100GB free disk space.

Windows Defender "realtime protection" turned off. Otherwise Defender is still enabled.

Here are the timings. This included about 60 seconds of clicking through dialogs.

Computing Space Requirements: 10
Start Install (Status=blank) 1:30
Computing space requirements 2:50
Validating install 3:10
Removing files 4:21
Removing backup files 6:20
Copying new files 7:10
Blank 8:50
Finished 9:00

Note that this on a different computer to my previous post and so the results cannot be directly compared.

So installing without Anti Virus running on a non fragmented hard drive takes about 8 minutes on my computer (not including navigating through dialogs)

I installed LO 3.6.1.2 on Vista 32 bit WITH Windows Defender running. The install took 6:30 AFTER choosing installation options.

So I don't think AntiVirus is making any difference to install times at all.
