Tried with drm-intel-next snapshot from here: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next/2012-09-21-quantal/

Much better. I'm actually able to issue several commands to the hero before GPU hangs.

Ken finally found a change that fixed many snb hangs.  Could you re-try with a Mesa containing this fix:  (either master, or 9.2.3)

I cannot reproduce this DOTA2 issue on SandyBridge on master, the game doesn't hang. 

OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Sandybridge Mobile 
OpenGL core profile version string: 3.1 (Core Profile) Mesa 10.2.0-devel (git-952fda4)
OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 1.40
