Created attachment 69762 [details] Screen shot showing the scrambled screen - nautilus with Home folder opened. After using desktop for sometime (Ubuntu) the screen scrambles. Happens with Unity, Unity 2D, Gnome 3, Gnome classic (gnome 2), cinnamon desktops. Logout and login solves it - It does not seem to appear again till I reboot the system. As it happens with all desktops it is not related to compiz/3D i guess. The desktop wallpaper scrambles and text in all the applications (Unity sidebar, nautilus, gedit, qtcretor, vlc, totem etc) scrambles except firefox, gnome-terminal. I don't know how / what are making them better. Only text scrambles in these applications able to play video well in vlc and totem. It happens after every reboot. Attached screen shot showing how things looks.

libdrm version - 2.4.35 (obtained from pkg-config). uname -a output Linux <myname>-desktop 3.2.0-7-generic #13-Ubuntu SMP Sat Dec 24 18:06:57 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux.
I am running mint (based on Ubuntu - not sure of the version number). I am using an Intel 82945GCCR graphics chipset. Using a VGA monitor from Samsung at 1280 x 1024 resolution. I will try to provide as much information as possible if needed but I am going in vacation till 19th (Please adjust if I could not update the bugzilla till then). No big steps to reproduce this bug - just use the system for some time (may be 15 to 20 minutes) of normal working (browse, write email, hear music etc). Then the bug comes back. If I use firefox the bug appears soon (I have been using from firefox 13 to firefox 16, all have the same effect). Note: There is no problem while I use Windows 7 Ultimate (with Aero enabled) even for very long time (more than a couple of hours). So I guess the hardware is not faulty.

"lsb_release -a" output: No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: LinuxMint Description: Linux Mint 12 Lisa Release: 12 Codename: lisa I guess this will provide information on the OS version. I am using a old chip and I am fine with the performance and the feature set so please don't ask me to buy a new gpu. Thanks a lot for your help.
Your drivers are over a year old, so the first pertinent question is whether you can still reproduce using the latest stable versions?
(In reply to comment #7) > Your drivers are over a year old, so the first pertinent question is whether > you can still reproduce using the latest stable versions? I have to check that. I already (may be some months back) tried to update X (compile from source) but found it has unmet dependencies (it needs updating a lot of other software) so I did not proceed further. I will try to install the latest intel driver from source and get back. I can do that only after 19th as I will not be accessing my computer till then. I will get back with more details. Thanks for the fast response.
Updated the driver and the problem does not seem to appear (I have tested for about 2 hours and I could not see the issue).
Marking this bug as RESOLVED INVALID.
Actually my update was to version 2.17.0 as I was not able to meet the dependencies of 2.20.0 driver. Things were going fine for some time, all the windows are show correctly without any scrambling but when I press Alt + Tab I could see the scrambling. I am using Unity interface. I am not able to take screen shot while holding Alt + Tab but the screen scramble looks similar. Changing the status of the bug to reopened. I will be glad to provide as much as details that is needed further.

Please feel free to ask for more details. With this new driver also I get screen scrambling. Screen scrambling happens soon if I use firefox with a lots of tab opened. This time other windows that I open are not scrambled but Alt + Tab and desktop wallpaper are scrambled. Top half of the desktop wallpaper is scrambled while the bottom half looks as usual.
I suspect you have a swizzling bug. Are you able to test a recent kernel? In particular, commit c9c4b6f6c28354f1df9bd288dc33ba7ae0e66aaa Author: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch> Date: Wed Dec 14 13:57:15 2011 +0100 drm/i915: fix swizzle detection for gen3 in v3.4 onwards.

I have installed 3.5.0-17-generic kernel from Ubuntu repository (Ubuntu 12.10 uses this kernel). I will wait for some time (may be 2+ hours or so) and see if the problem got solved.
Used the system for 3:45 minutes. I did not get any issues so far. I guess upgrading to Linux 3.5 solved the issue. Just for ensuring things are good I will wait till tomorrow and close this bug if not reproduced. Thanks for the time and help :).
Things are great now :). The issue is not reproduced, I am closing the bug :).
