My friend has a weird crackling that will happen on GNU/Linux Mint 14 where there's a sudden crackling and static feedback. I was able to get rid of the problem by purging Pulseaudio. I was able to temporarily fix the bug by doing a killall on Pulseaudio. The standard reply to sudden corrupted audio: have you tried the position_fix thing that is described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/PositionReporting ?
Turning off the PulseAudio timing corrected the problem. It seemed to only happen after opening VLC. I'll go file a bug report with them as well. Thank you and my friend thanks you as well! :D
