Can you post a image of what you get? I'm not able to see anything wrong here.
Hmmm i got a image from Nicolas and i can see black square in it but not when using CVS version, Jeff is it possible your lastest commit about cairo fixed it?

Tested on FC5 devel BTW
Probably related to the bug 5540
Nicholas any possibility you use poppler from cvs to see if that fixes it?
Created attachment 4738 [details] CVS build log
CVS poppler does not build
can you please not disable splash output for the moment?
1. splash output was disabled in the original distro packaging. I'm not sure if comparing two releases with different build options is fair 2. without the no splash output flag and after rebuilding evince the graffiti is displayed correctly 3. however evince now prints blank pages
with print you mean real printing right to a paper sheet, right? Bug 5946 is about that, we are working on it ;-) If you update from CVS you will be able to compile with splash disabled again, i'm closing the bug as fixed.
Ok. I'll pass on updating till bug #5946 is cloised, I do need to print pdf files now and then
