The usual way to get commit access to open source projects is to submit patches to the mailing list first.  Once you have a track record you can apply for commit access.

FWIW he posted some patches a while ago in exactly that area, they are in git starting from 31c63b058edd988004e1bea261a03235a8752229.

I've created the account, but without any group membership yet, as at the moment we (Adhemerval and I) just need the ability to push to personal repo for collaboration.
