Description shrek-m 2006-03-01 07:49:37 UTC
powermac g5 (dual) - radeon 9600 - driver=ati

startx is ok since >= fc5test3
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=180735
"startx - black screen and no keyboard - RV350 AP [Radeon 9600]"

but if i switch from tty7=X to eg. tty1
or i logout from gnome
or i shutdown X with alt+ctrl+backspace

i get a black screen and no keyboard and no mouse is available.
mostly the system is reachable via ssh, sometimes the system freezes completely.
Comment 1 shrek-m 2006-03-01 08:01:22 UTC
it is not gnome relevant, the same happens with `X`only

Have caind of similar thing with latest Fedpra test 3 release.
Radeon 9550
After installation monitor displayed message unsupported resolution (1280x1024
?), then only black screen. After few resets i was able to kill X server, login
via console.
Changed driver to vesa, started X, changed driver to ati again.
Changed resolution to 1024x768 - now it works, but only for 1024, any other
resolution do not display a thing, just black screen.

Comment 3 shrek-m 2006-03-05 06:27:49 UTC
i do not know if this is relevant.

i have my monitor connected to the radeon_secondary_port.
[radeon 9600 fc5t3]{port2} --> {video2}iiyama a 902 mt{video1} <-- [nforce1 fc3]

the radeon works sometimes at 848x480 or 640x480 but not at 1280x1024 like the
nforce1.

if i connect the monitor to the radeon_primary_port the system goes black and
freezes the machine absolutely.
this happens with X, startx, system-config-display, etc.

xorg.conf ok radeon 1280x1024 iiyama

it is relevant, at least after the last updates.
the same xorg.conf, driver = radeon
radeon{port1} = 1280x1024
switch connection and reboot
radeon{port2} = 848x480

# rpm -q xorg-x11-server-Xorg xorg-x11-drv-ati

Comment 5 shrek-m 2006-03-29 08:12:28 UTC
in gnome-terminal i can now reboot `init 6` and shutdown `init 0` without freeze.

switching from tty7 to tty1 = freeze
`system-config-display --reconfig`  (runlevel 3) = freeze
this was sometimes ok before the last updates.

xorg.conf pmg5 ati -- anaconda

this xorg.conf from fc5test3 anaconda was in 99,99% ok to startx.

i changed manually the driver from ati to radeon
and the monitor and resolution via system-config-display in a gnome-session

# rpm -q system-config-display
system-config-display-1.0.37-2

Comment 8 Michel Dänzer 2006-04-10 18:10:50 UTC
First of all, have you guys ruled out that this is a Fedora Core specific problem?

Please try to get a backtrace with gdb, preferably with a driver that contains
debugging symbols.
Comment 9 shrek-m 2006-04-11 00:33:00 UTC
1;
fedora was the only distri which was really installable.

iirc the debian-testing installer was dying a few weeks ago on this machine.
iirc the ubuntu installer drapper-flight5 was dying too a few weeks ago.

the ubuntu live drapper-flight6 could boot and start X (ati) but it was frozen
too if i tried to switch the terminal or kill X.
logout was ok and a new gdm-greeter was visible.
a sidenote, all fans are blowing in full speed and the powermac is louder as an
starting aeroplane. will say, i will not destroy my mac.

==> fedora is actually the only distri which is ok on this machine.
the "black screen" and "freezing" problem is not fedora specific.

2;
which driver contains debugging symbols ?
how can i get a backtrace(bt) with gdb ?

gdb /usr/bin/startx
gdb /usr/sbin/gdm
seems not to be ok.

gdb /usr/bin/X
exec-file, run == X will not start

3;
i guess my linux experiences on this mac will soon come to an end.
@ati, this was my first and my last ati.
Comment 10 shrek-m 2006-04-19 03:46:55 UTC
thanks for all your hard work not to solve this bug.

"Mac OS X" and "Mac OS X Server" has wiped out all linux-distris on this
powermac and all the problems.

what luck that at least the nv-driver is ok on my other machines.
no more "ati" and no more "bugs.fedoradesktop.org"

ciao

Mass reopen. The "LATER" resolution is lame, I'm deleting it. Consider LATER to have arrived.
Comment 12 Jerome Glisse 2009-05-20 05:22:39 UTC
Closing this bug, reopen if you same issue with recent xorg, kernel and xf86-video-ati.
