kernel log

Environment: Thinkpad X220 4286CTO with HD 3000 graphics
OS: Ubuntu 12.04 32bit

While using two monitors with a 3D desktop environment (gnome-shell / unity) I get the following ERROR after a few hours of using the system (heavy desktop usage).

The error causes the desktop manager to crash, while applications keep running. I can then still start a 2D window manager like metacity, but respawning unity caused the system to crash hard several times.

The first message (WARNING: at /build/buildd/linux-3.2.0/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915_drv.c:418 __gen6_gt_wait_for_fifo+0x7c/0x80 [i915]()) is repeated about 20 times within the same second. Then four seconds later, the Hangcheck timer expires.

Kernel 3.2 is very old, and the error you have here is fixed by using semaphores and more than likely quite a few w/a added since.
