The "Find Local Support" icon displays the US flag. I don't think this is a good idea because: - "Local" implies other languages besides English, and so, the US being English speaking, a US flag is not relevant - The US has acquired a questionable reputation in recent world history and a US flag may therefore offend people I'd suggest using imaginary flags or flags of 'neutral' countries. (I thought the previous combination of the Czech republic and Ireland was pretty neat)
I have changed the summary to reflect the core of the request. If I misinterpreted, please correct me. I kinda agree with your reasoning and will give it a shot. To fix things in a shorter time frame, do you think just replacing the order of the flags, making german topmost would make things better?
Cool. Yea, switching the flags would already be an improvement IMO.
2006-03-16 Jakub Steiner <jimmac@ximian.com> * preferences-desktop-locale: flip the flag order to emphesise on "international". See bug #6278 Leaving open as the czech/irish would probably be even better.
No flags at all would be best. This is actually an icon that a globe would be useful for. How about a globe and passport combo? Seems quite fitting to me. Let's try to keep political comments and personal opinions out of bugzilla though. And it's a good idea to avoid potential political issues in icons such as this, where something other than flags, would probably be better.
This is discussed in https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/tango-icon-theme/+bug/40480 as well.
Fixed in CVS. I just made the flags be basic tango color flags, rather than actual representations of flags.
