Compare two lines: "Add non breaking space before specific punctuation marks in french text" and "Format ordinal numbers suffixes (1st -> 1^st)". Second line presumes you are from English speaking country... in my humble opinion at the end of second line there should be text: "in English text" at the end of line (see print-screen for details). Test 1: a) Open new document in Writer. b) Tools | Language | For all Text | More | on Font tab - Western text font select Language English (USA) c) Type in text: 1st world war you will notice first word change to 1^st. Works as expected because English uses "^st" for counting "first", "second", "third". Test 2: a) Open new document in Writer. b) Tools | Language | For all Text | More | on Font tab - Western text font select Language French (France) Note: You can select any other non-English language. c) Type in text: 1st world war you will notice first word does not changes to 1^st. Works as expected, because French does not use 1^st. Above tests proves that there is missing "in English text" text in "step 2".

confirmed in LibO 4.1.1.2 and recent 4.2 master (sept.3 build). it is the same in any OOo, LibO and AOO release, so version is "inherited from OOo" basically the reporter propose to edit this string: "Format ordinal numbers suffixes (1st -> 1^st)". with this: "Format ordinal numbers suffixes (1st -> 1^st) in English text". I agree with that. with the actual string is not clear that that setting will apply only to english languages and not to others. since it's a localized option it should be indicated which locale it belongs to. adding Writer expert to CC list.

Two additional notes: 1. This problem is not Writer specific. It is the same problem in Calc, Impress, Draw... it looks like common feature. 2. I am not native English speaker, but in my humble opinion if there is correct "in English text", then it is probably also correct "in French text" in the first line. See attachment in_french_text.png
Hello, Since "some" time (at least LibO 3.6.7 for French, 4.1.2 for Catalan) this option is localized and works according the language used. For instance, in French 1er -> 1^er, 2e -> 2^e, etc. or in Catalan, 1r -> 1^r So the localized UI may be modified but not the English one.
