From downstream https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-control-center/+bug/1186816 I switched around my monitor configuration so that I have 1 monitor on my primary video card (1920x1080), and 2 monitors (1680x1024) on my secondary video. The primary monitor's default resolution is higher than the other two monitors so when it first started the other two wouldn't display anything. I changed the resolution of all three to the maximum they could all support, but they're still all mirrored. Then I changed the screen layout so that there is no mirroring. After applying the changes, gnome-shell and X die bringing me back to the login screen. If I just mirror the monitors, all three will display. I've tried changing the layout through arandr, and gnome-control-center with the same result. Before I changed the monitor configuration I had two 1680x1024 monitors on the primary video card, and one other 1680x1024 on my secondary video card. This configuration worked. Just an update and correction. - The two monitors on my secondary video card are also 1920x1080, no 1680x1024. - If I take one of the monitors from the secondary card, and plug it into the primary, everything works as expected.
