Description Brian Hall 2006-04-12 01:53:43 UTC
Upgraded to xorg-x11-7.0-r1 on my Gentoo Linux ~amd64 system. I am using the
free radeon driver with my generic ATI Radeon 9200 SE (5964 AGP 128MB). I did
the revdep-rebuild and ensured that I had selected xorg-x11 opengl:

# eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
[1] ati
[2] xorg-x11 *
[3] nvidia

2D display is OK, but I'm having some problems.

1) 3D no longer works in 16-bit mode, it only works in 24-bit mode. I used
16-bit 3D with no problems in 6.8.2, so I'm unable to do a direct 6.8.2/7.0
comparison, but glxgears 24-bit 7.0 is about 10% slower than 16-bit 6.8.2. Is
this a bug with 7.0, or an xorg design decision to only support 24bit 3D?

2) EXA acceleration is MUCH slower than XAA when selected in xorg.conf, looks
like no hardware acceleration is taking place although the log says EXA is enabled.

3) 3D programs give strange errors (see below). In 16-bit, I just get the errors
and the program doesn't start. In 24-bit, I still get errors but the program(s)
start and run.

4) cedega-4.4 no longer works (in 16-bit mode with 7.0):
X Error of failed request: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 129 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 3 (X_GLXCreateContext)
Serial number of failed request: 98
Current serial number in output stream: 99

Using 24-bit mode, Cedega games work but are noticeably slower than using 16-bit
in 6.8.2.

5) Trying to use AGP 8X or enabling fastwrites in xorg.conf results in complete
lockup. My AGP card, motherboard, and kernel support both. This is with AGP set
to 8X and/or AGP Fastwrites enabled via BIOS on an Asrock 939Dual-Sata2.

Is 7.0 working as designed/expected in this case?

I have switched back to 6.8.2 for now.
Comment 1 Eric Anholt 2006-04-27 09:41:51 UTC
I'm sorry, but this bug *really* needed to be submitted as 5 separate bugs.
It's uselessly intertwined as is.

1) 16-bit 3D acceleration works for me. also, glxgears is not a benchmark. you
would need to explain what you mean by "no longer works".
2) EXA performance characteristics have totally changed since 7.0, with many
major issues having been fixed.
3) Those are warnings, not errors. And they've been harmless in every case I've
seen so far.
4) this is likely an app bug. Cedega's closed or almost so (haven't followed
them in ages), so I wouldn't touch it to find out.
5) There's a reason those aren't turned on by default.
