Description galens 2013-07-23 18:44:38 UTC
I'm attempting to install the spice-agent and supporting drivers onto a Windows XP 64-bit VM running on Fedora 19.

The spice-guest-tools installation executable (v0.59) does not support this version of XP.
There are download links for the agent's executables, but no instructions on how to install and/or test.

Hi,

I'm not in a charge of this topic, but... I doubt someone here ever has this OS installed. I know many products usually target WinXP 32bit only (admitting 64bit is barely usable), for 64bits supporting only Win7, 8... Are there any specific needs for WinXP 64bit for you, Win7 not suitable?

I don't have a license for Win7 and really would like to avoid buying one if at all possible.

As for XP 64bit support, my general experience is that WinXP 64 isn't usually supported because no one bothers to try to see if the code will work there. Most software that works on Windows Server 2003 x64 will run, unchanged or with minimal registry hacking, on XP x64. (For instance, back when I was running the OS on bare metal, rather than in a VM, I got a variety of sound cards, video cards, and my iPod to work fine using the 2k3x64 drivers, once I hacked the installation scripts to allow install on XP64.)

This could be as simple as changing the install script to allow installation on this version of windows. (Or, it could be much harder.) I don't currently have a system set up to cross-compile to Windows; otherwise I'd take a look at the installation script in order to try building a custom install package.

(fwiw, we do bother with xp 64bit here.. so your bug is relevant, just don't know what will be the priority)

Not sure if we should support win xp at this point?
