I don't ordinarily suggest ratifying an idea from the Evil Empire of Redmond; however, the "<name>.url" files stored by IE for "Favorites" are simple ini-format files. Because they are so much like other Freedesktop files, it should be easy to use. I don't know about "intellectual property" issues with something that is really pretty obvious once one thinks about it. Below is a 'cat' of the most complicated one I can find on my machine. Some of the keys, I can't imagine the use of. That could be handled, for example, by stating "An implementer MAY add additional keys, and SHOULD register these keys with ...." <CLIP> -bash_$ cat LWN.net.url [DEFAULT] BASEURL=http://lwn.net/ [DOC_aswift_0] BASEURL=http://lwn.net/ ORIGURL= [DOC_aswift_0_google_ads_frame1#37] BASEURL=http://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?client=ca-pub-4358676377058562&format=120x240_as&output=html&h=240&w=120&lmt=1363994768&channel=0946045135&ad_type=text_image&color_bg=ffcc99&color_border=ffcc99&color_link=0000FF&color_text=000000&color_url=008000&flash=0&url=http%3A%2F%2Flwn.net%2F&dt=1363994768318&bpp=172&shv=r20130319&cbv=r20130206&correlator=1363994768677&frm=20&adk=3061909479&ga_vid=1041647380.1363994769&ga_sid=1363994769&ga_hid=423772323&ga_fc=0&u_tz=-240&u_his=0&u_java=1&u_h=864&u_w=1152&u_ah=836&u_aw=1152&u_cd=32&u_nplug=0&u_nmime=0&dff=times%20new%20roman&dfs=16&adx=13&ady=149&biw=1148&bih=648&oid=3&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.linuxfoundation.org%2Fnews-media%2Flwf&docm=8&fu=0&ifi=1&dtd=578&xpc=a3sScqnmHK&p=http%3A//lwn.net ORIGURL= [DOC_ados_frame_azk13321_leaderboard_38119] BASEURL=http://lwn.net/ ORIGURL=javascript:window["contents"] [DOC_ados_frame_azk13321_leaderboard_38119_aswift_0] BASEURL=http://lwn.net/ ORIGURL= [DOC_ados_frame_azk13321_leaderboard_38119_aswift_0_google_ads_frame1#41] BASEURL=http://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?client=ca-pub-4358676377058562&output=html&h=90&slotname=1253766630&w=728&ea=0&flash=0&dt=1363994770740&bpp=31&shv=r20130319&cbv=r20130206&correlator=1363994770880&frm=23&adk=482215668&ga_vid=1041647380.1363994769&ga_sid=1363994769&ga_hid=203410106&ga_fc=1&u_tz=-240&u_his=0&u_java=1&u_h=864&u_w=1152&u_ah=836&u_aw=1152&u_cd=32&u_nplug=0&u_nmime=0&dff=times%20new%20roman&dfs=16&adx=178&ady=70&biw=1132&bih=648&isw=728&ish=90&ifk=2791717072&oid=3&top=http%3A%2F%2Flwn.net%2F&docm=8&fu=4&ifi=1&dtd=375 ORIGURL= [DOC_ados_frame_azk93271_right_zone_45719] BASEURL=http://lwn.net/ ORIGURL=javascript:window["contents"] [InternetShortcut] URL=http://lwn.net/ IDList= IconFile=http://lwn.net/favicon.ico IconIndex=1 [{000214A0-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}] Prop3=19,2 </CLIP>
hi, Sorry about the very long delay in replying to this. This proposal looks a bit like a solution looking for a problem. freedesktop specs normally don't operate in this way. We're more interested in finding common ground between existing implementations of various things already in the several desktop environments and documenting and building on that. I think this is probably off-topic with that.
