Description Eric Towers 2006-05-03 12:31:08 UTC
This bug was detected using an Acer AL2416W monitor. Details of this device,
including timing specifications can be found at
http://csd.acer.com.tw/acer/URMUL1.NSF/1af87a750eeeb70f0825628f006e0bfc/090e4352ee164afe4825709200141575/$FILE/AL2416W%20p%20user%20manual%20.pdf

The highest resolution supported by this monitor is 1920x1200 (@60). This
monitor is successfully driven at this resolution by Win98SE with nVidia binary
drivers through a GF4800. Extracting the effective modeline from Win98SE using
arcane magic suggests
    153.56 1920 1984 2016 2080 1200 1203 1209 1235 +hsync -vsync
which is readily apparently unlike the modeline suggested by the above-linked
manual, but may be informative.

Software version numbers and a hardware description are given below.

When using the "nv" generic driver, the 1920x1200 and 1600x1200 modes do not
work. None of the modelines extracted from the Win98SE machine, those
automatically generated (as listed in a giant block in the Xorg.log file), those
suggested by the above manual, nor those copied exactly from the "nvidia"-using
xorg.conf work.

When using the "nvidia" binary driver, version 1.0.8756, the 1920x1200 and
1600x1200 modes work. The explicitly listed modeline above is used by the
nvidia driver.

Expected behaviour:
Generally, that automatically detected display video modes will be successfully
driven by the "nv" driver module. Specifically, modelines identically copied
from a working "nvidia" xorg.conf file will produce working video modes under
the "nv" driver.

Observed behaviour: the "nv" driver cannot be coerced to drive the Acer AL2416W
monitor at its highest (vertical) resolution, using modelines from any source.

Created attachment 5551 [details]
xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files for nv and nvidia configs

The configuration files and startup log files for the "nv" and "nvidia" driven
setups are attached. Extract as
    tar -xvzf xorg_files.tar.gz
producing the folder xorg_files containing four files.	The "nv" files are
suffixed with ".nv" and the "nvidia" files are suffixed with ".nvidia".

Sorry about the phenomenal bug spam, guys. Adding xorg-team@ to the QA contact so bugs don't get lost in future.

xf86-video-nv has been officially unmaintained for a bit now, and we are closing all -nv bugs. If your problem was not addressed, and -nv is still broken, please try xf86-video-nouveau. Thank you.
