Hi, I want to report some problems with my new computer . I am using Fedora 20 alpha 64 bits with an AMD Radeon HD8240. My X.Org X Server 1.14.3 . When il lauched the X server my cursor is scrambled , and all object are very slow (Window and other .. ) . If i use a desktop like Gnome 3 all is too slow.... For exemple , when i tape a message with my keyboard i have a latence. But when i use the LXDE desktop it s more fastest . I don't know why i see a scrambled cursor (two black lines in down) .. (With Gnome 3 and Lxde ) Probably radeon doesn't support my radeon HD8240? Or not completely ? unfortunely we can't see my icon mouse when i make a print screen.. this is my command back : cat /proc/bus/pci/devices | grep VGA || lspci | grep VGA | colrm 1 4 ; cat /proc/cpuinfo | egrep "model name|MHz" ; xdpyinfo -display :0 | egrep "version:|dimensions|depth of" ; glxinfo -display :0 | egrep -A2 "rendering|OpenGL" 1.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. NB : With fedora 19 , i can't start the X server , but with my fedora 20 alpha it's ok with a good resolution 1920X1080 . But i think i have no acceleration 3d and some bug with the icon mouse. This is my dmesg pastebin : http://pastebin.com/cSJgzM8x and This my Xorg.log pastebin : http://pastebin.com/vWRkZq4H Thanks for your help.
Please attach your xorg log and dmesg output. Pastebins can disappear.
You are using the generic modesetting X driver rather than the xf86-video-ati driver. It looks like the version of xf86-video-ati you have installed does not contain support for kabini. You need a newer version of xf86-video-ati.

Thanks Alex for your help , I hope the radeon driver will include my card..

Thanks again Alex ;)
Hi ALex , I have tried the latest radeon driver with the fedora rawhide repo . -xorg-x11-drv-ati-7.2.0-0 But unfortunately it doesn't work for me . When i arrived in gdm , i have a black screen . I have restarted with init 3 and copy my xorg log and a dmesg , i send you the result .

Mesa needs to be built against llvm 3.4 or your version of mesa needs this patch: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/commit/?id=9da4021626dd48a1cc25054d1d4009e098f4d97b
Unfortunately i can't test that for the moment , fedora don't have llvm 3.4 . Same in rawhide repo .. I prefer waiting an update in the repo .
We have have asked for add this patch in fedora. Thanks for your help Alex, you are the Best ;-)
I will try mesa 9.2.2 with the patch as soon as possible .

I have some news , I have installed the latest radeon driver . (7.2.0) And i have created a xorg.conf . (there are an attachment of my Xorg.conf file) When i have generated an automatic xorg.conf with Xorg -configure i can see some screens detected .. (Xorgauto.conf) but i have just one screen .... I think it s the problem . Because when i use my xorg.conf , i have neither problem on my screen , all it s perfect . I have no cursor crambled , perfect : ) I can see in the latest xorg.0.log file that i use now the good driver "radeon". (newxorglog) Probably some problems with auto dectect peripheral ?

(In reply to comment #19) > I just bought a Acer laptop with AMD Radeon HD 8240 card and could not > install any variant of latest Linux. I tried all Fedora, ubuntu(gnome, xfce) > in all cases it cant load the graphic mode. Your kernel and graphics stack are too old.
I also had this ame problem whereby the fglrx drivers would not work in Linux Mint 16. I downloaded the Beta drivers from ATI's website (AMD Catalyst™ 14.1 LINUX Beta Driver) and ran them after unzipping them and changing the permissions so that it was executable, then installed them with the advice from the following URL: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/AMD, by using code: sudo aticonfig --initial. I used the properties from the amd-driver-installer-13.35.1005-x86.x86_64.run, changed the permission to allow it to be executable. Then I rebooted and it worked, as I no longer had to use the Running in Software Rendering Mode.I initially had to use this mode as I had to use recovery, connect network, then fix broken packages, then resume boot. Hopefully this will help others to get their laptops running as well as desktops.
