Different names for one function

Problem description:

When creating a pivot table, the naming of the functions can be confusing in several cases.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Select a data range
2. Create a pivot table (Data > Pivot table > Create) and chose "current selection"
3. Drag and drop a source in the data field
4. Double click the source to choose a function

Current behaviour:

The following can be confusing to the user:
- The "Average" function results in "Mean" appearing in the layout (see attached screenshot);
- The "Count (numbers only)" function results in "Count" appearing in the layout, which is the same result as using the simple "Count" function;
- The names "StDev" and "Var" might not be explicit enough.

Expected behaviour:

Ideally, each function should have a shortened name if needed, accompanied by a clear explanation between brackets in the functin selection window.
A function name should be the same in the list and in the layout, and each function should have a different name to discern them in the layout.

This issue is exactly the same in current "Still":

Version: 5.0.5.2

I have made three tests on Windows 7 with three different versions:
===========================
SUMMARY INFO
===========================
1. LibreOffice Still 5.0.5.2 (the same problem)
2. LibreOffice Fresh 5.1.0.3 (the same problem)
3. LibreOffice master 5.2.0.0-alfa0+ nightly (can't test, looks like broken)

===========================
DETAILED TESTS
===========================

TEST 1:

There are the following options from menu:
Data | Pivot table | Create
Data | Pivot table | Refresh
Data | Pivot table | Delete

The naming problem is the same as in "Description" of this bug.

From Help | About menu:
Version: 5.0.5.2
Build ID: 55b006a02d247b5f7215fc6ea0fde844b30035b3

TEST 2:

There are the following options from menu:
Data | Pivot table | Pivot table
Data | Pivot table | Refresh
Data | Pivot table | Delete
Note: The first option is strange, double "Pivot table". Don't know if this is additional bug or new "feature".

The naming problem is the same as in "Description" of this bug.

From Help | About menu:
Version: 5.1.0.3
Build ID: 5e3e00a007d9b3b6efb6797a8b8e57b51ab1f737
CPU Threads: 3; OS Version: Windows 6.1; UI Render: default

TEST 3:

There are the following options from menu:
Data | Pivot table | Refresh
Data | Pivot table | Delete
Note: This is even more strange. There are only two options available from menu. I don't know if something has changed or there is something broken. I expect to have "Create" option after I mark cells in spreadsheet, but it is not available.

From Help | About menu:
Version: 5.2.0.0.alpha0+
Build ID: 6d5eeb6af585ae525645d844cbbd56e76678a0af
CPU Threads: 3; OS Version: Windows 6.1; UI Render: default;

Comment 8 Stéphane Guillou (stragu) 2018-09-23 01:51:04 UTC
Tested in:

Version: 6.0.6.2
Build ID: 1:6.0.6-0ubuntu0.18.04.1
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 4.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3;
Locale: en-AU (en_GB.UTF-8); Calc: group

The results are slightly different to the original description:

"Average" is now the same word in the menu, the layout and the pivot table headers, which is good.

However, there is still potential confusion in the naming of functions:
- Some names are still abbreviated and never spelled out ("StDev" and "Var"), which makes it less accessible for people who don't know what they stand for;
- The layout and the pivot table headers do not make the distinction between the variations of Count, StDev, and Var: both the layout and the pivot table headers only show "Var" for both "Var" and "VarP", "StDev" for both "StDev" and "StDevP", and "Count" for "Count" and "Count (numbers only)".

Confirming the same issue as described in comment 8, with:

CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 4.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3;

example pivot table with repeated names (LO 7.2)

On top of having the same (abbreviated) name for variations of one function in the dialogue, the same is shown in the resulting pivot table, as shown in the example document (second sheet).

This means that columns with the same title show different results in the pivot table.

Still relevant as in comment 8 in recent trunk build:

Version: 24.2.0.0.alpha1+ (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 5589659829f8a1cef8ca1c8a468732105bbe231b
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

Same issue with pivot table headings in OOo 3.3, so issue is inherited.

wrong names for functions
Comment 15 Peter 2024-05-14 13:09:11 UTC
I’d like to bring back this problem to your attention.
The problems still exists with LO 24.2 (verified with the attached example file).

And also: Pivot tables mix up headings resp. use “Average” for “Sum”, no matter what it really is.

Granted, this does not happen when a Pivot table is created first. Yet on some subsequent re-opening/editing, the fitting headers are lost.
Even in the Editing window, when I go down to the function, the name is baked in … it says “Average xyz”, although the chosen function is e.g. “Sum”.

Even more intresting IMHO … “Count” does work :-O
