U+21E9 is an arrow (should look a bit like this one: 
http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/21e9/downwards_white_arrow.png) 
This glyph is at the moment only present in DejaVu Sans, and not in Serif or 
Mono.

Since KDE doesn't do glyph substitution well (replacing glyphs that aren't in 
a font with those from another font that has them), it will show as a big 
rectangle when you use Mono or Serif.

Firefox can handle the glyph substitution and will display the arrow, even if 
Mono or Serif is used.

I mucked around with my font settings in firefox and changed them to
DejuVu and it is rendering properly now.  Thanks for your help! :)
