Description dan 2014-02-08 18:18:43 UTC
i dont know what happened but at some point the spreadsheet became just painful to use. i grant there are a lot of calculation on this one but there was a point with the heavy calculations that i could input as fast as i wanted. now there is an ever increasing amount of time it takes to input. the wait between putting something in and being able to put something in the next cell has got to be near 1 minute now and with the same spreadsheet, it never used to be this bad.

i dont know what info you need but please let me know whatever to get this fixed.

Hi Dan, thanks for reporting.

I think you are talking about a in which enter data in cell became slow as more data are entered, I'll try to locate it to inform in what version it was solved.

Meanwhile, I think the only workaround is close and reopen the file.
Comment 2 m_a_riosv 2014-02-09 02:57:33 UTC
I think is the same as in:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=63932

It was marked as fixed, please see the last comment of Micheal Meeks.

In the new 4.2 was done a very deep and hard rework for calc core. But I'm not so sure that the issue is completely solved at least much less visible.

You can try with 4.2 already released a few days ago, but if you do so, please do a deep verification that your spreadsheets works properly, is usual some annoying bugs in the first release of a mayor version, most of them being solved. I am with 4.0.6 in my job for now.

Here you can find all versions:

you are correct, that does appear to be the same issue. i really hope this was indeed solved because right now it is pretty painful using calc. i know this spreadsheet is large but it is not that large.

thanks for the help. i will put 4.2 on when i can.
Comment 4 dan 2014-02-09 13:21:38 UTC
i installed 4.2 and it did not fix the issue. it is just as bad as it was before. what it seems to be doing is it freezes after you put something into a cell. so i type say 2, hit tab or enter for the next cell. it freezes for a bit, many seconds, upto 30 or more as i have seen, and then it does the calcs and moves to the next cell.

Please reopen the bug and try to explain as detailed as possible how to reproduce it, a sample file could be helpful.

that is an example of one of my spreadsheets. over the last couple of revisions it has taken longer and longer to open. on top of that, if you enter a time into column d of the first tab, it will take a long time for it to finish or whatever...
Comment 8 GerardF 2014-02-09 21:38:53 UTC
Presumably caused by the very high number of Conditional format.
See https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72735 and my comment (9).

You can also use the "AutoFormat" fonctionality for this.

Sample file after a clean in Conditional format and formatted cells

Find attached your sample file after reduce the number of conditional format to an one by sheet, and deleting a lot of formatted cells with black background up to the bottom of the sheets.
What really reduce the time is adjust the conditional format.
Comment 10 dan 2014-02-09 23:07:57 UTC
that attachment for some reason did not work BUT working within that context and checking the conditional formatting was 100% the issue. once i cleaned those up, it REALLY sped up the program.
Comment 11 dan 2014-02-15 03:49:37 UTC
okay, i figured out how this happened and i am pretty sure you would consider this a bug. when i created my spreadsheets, they weren't finalized with the conditional formatting.

if i create conditional formatting for columns say a1:c10 with say formula mod(row(),2) (with alternating gray lines), and save that conditional formatting. then i add a column inbetween those values so add a column to the left of c, the conditional formatting will go crazy and add all of those lines, the 12000 mentioned earlier on my spreadsheet.

in investigating that further i also noted that once this happens, when i manually changed the values to what they should be, libreoffice calc would some how change them to nearly random values.

when this happened on my original sheet, obviously it slowed everything down.
