This is to help in figuring out why it is not finding a package. Yes I know "pkg-config --variable=pc_path pkg-config" will sort-of produce the correct value. However this is entirely unintuitive and undiscoverable. In addition it may report a different value than actually used by the instance of pkg-config. If this was an acceptable solution then you should also remove --version and say that you must do "pkg-config --modversion pkg-config".
attachment 99544 [details] [review] in bug 79032 should address this issue too, it prints out the search path if a package hasn't been found.
