could be encoded into libinput's general behaviour, i.e. automatically orient that tilt is relative to the device's origin, etc.

This is done by the tablet support branch and by anything else that has a left-handed mode setting. That's the only device I think where it makes sense.

For touchscreens, the calibration matrix takes care of this anyway.
