Description thibault_g 2014-06-10 19:48:37 UTC
Hello,

Ubuntu 14.04 worked very well until I made an update. Now, I have a black screen. I tried all the solutions I found on the Web. No results. I tried the recovery. No results. I tried to reinstall Ubuntu, but the screen stay dark and I can't do nothing. If I understand well, the update installed a new graphic pilot, and I can not see anymore what's behind the black screen. Do someone can help me? I have an Asus K50Ij with a graphic card Intel® GMA 4500M.

Thank you so much,

TG.

I need some log files. Please attach the output of dmesg and /var/log/Xorg.0.log. You may find logging in via ssh easiest, but also you can grab some old logs if you log in via a live CD.

Hello,

First, I try to log with a live CD or a live USB, but except the black screen or the console, nothing happens.

I can do dmesg in the console, but I don't know how and where copying it. Except the access to the console at the beginning, I am stuck by the black screen. I write this message from another computer and I am not sure I can't transfer the log files. Maybe I can send it to me by email via the console, and after paste it here, but I don't know how to do copy and email it from the console.

Either, I don't know how to see the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log by the console. when I type it in the console, it says "command not found"

I will try SSH tomorrow.

Thank you,

I tried again /var/log/Xorg.0.log and it says permission denied.

Oh wait, you tried to *run* it? It's a text file, please just attach it.

Hello,

I know it's a textfile, but I do not succeed to access to it by the console, maybe I do the wrong thing. But, even if I access to it the same way I succeed to access to the output of dmesg, I can not attach the textfile or the output, because I just can see the console or a black screen.

Maybe it's possible to send the textfile or the output by email by the console, then attach or paste it to bugzilla, but I don't know how to do it and I don't find a way to do it on the Web.

I tried SSH without success too. The screen is still black, but i did it rapidly yesterday. I will try more seriously today or tomorrow.

Thank you,

Does it work if you boot older kernels from the grub boot menu? What is the newest kernel version that works? What is the first kernel version that is broken?

Also, I think you should consider filing a bug against Ubuntu.

Hello,

Sorry for the delay. I was pretty busy.
I tried old kernel and it did not work.
I decide today to erase everything and to reinstall it. Problem solved.

Thanks to all.

TGE.
