Description Mattias Ellert 2006-09-10 07:49:07 UTC
The shape of the diagonal stroke of the capital Ʀ doesn't match the other
characters in the font. Its shape should be based on the shape of the diagonal
stroke in the captial R. The same kind of stroke that is added to a P to make it
an R should be added to Þ to make it an Ʀ.

The shape of the diagonal in Ʀ is different because it's a descender, i.e., it
goes below the baseline. At least that's why I made it that way.

How should it be fixed? Should Ʀ be just Þ with a diagonal arm? Should it also
have a higher bowl (loop)?

Example from Lucinda Sans

This is an example from a font with an internally consistent design. It is from
Lucinda Sans (which is the system font om MacOS X). Here the diagonal stroke on
the R and the Ʀ look the same. The bowl on the Ʀ is placed slightly higher
than on the Þ though, as you suggested in your comment.

The stroke on the Ʀ must attach to the bowl in the same way as the stroke on
the R, otherwise the two letters look weird when placed next to each other. In
the present design the stroke connects to the bowl of the Ʀ more to the left
than on the R.

You could possibly, maybe, make a little hook to the right on the lower end of
the stroke of the Ʀ without making it look inconsistent if you really want to,
but it shouldn't turn upwards - maybe something like the decender on the Q -
but I can't really imagine what it would look like.

Here's a tentative Ʀ. Let me know if it's better.

Yes, this looks very good. Thank you. What about the serifed version?

Ok, U+01A6 has been changed in Sans, Sans Mono and Serif in SVN.
Let us know if it needs more changes.
