Description hm 2014-08-07 09:37:22 UTC
To be able to rename the channels of a sound card (Front Left, Center etc) when the names are not valid for the specific setup (for example I have a 7.1 amp and speakers in the study, living, kitchen etc and have the channels named accordingly).

<tanuk_> Rather than allowing channel renaming, this will probably be implemented by splitting the underlying device into multiple virtual devices.

do you mean that you want four independent stereo output instead of a single 7.1 for the four rear panel jacks ?

In my case I have it connected to my 7.1 amp via hdmi. I have 2 speakers in my study, 2 in the hall, one in the living and one in the kitchen. The others I still have to connect cables to. So it is a mixture of stereo and mono.

xrandr --verbose

the graphic driver request your HDMI receiver to provide EDID which contain speaker allocation

the HDMI audio controller does not have any volume control

pulseaudio upmix stereo to 7.1 , centre and lfe get signal from both left and right channel

you only get three stereo output and two mono output playing same audio stream
