Description Robert Dowling 2006-09-12 07:07:03 UTC
Symptoms:

* Starting X (startx, Xorg, etc) blanks screen and hangs--need to cycle
power.
* Keyboard will not switch to other VT
* Can ping system and/or ssh in for a while, up to about 60
seconds, then it is dead. Once as quick as 18 seconds.
* Happens with config from FC6t2 install and from Xorg -configure.
* Reproducable
* Option "NoAccel" makes driver work consistently.
* rhbg works consistently (does it use NoAccel??)
* Vesa driver works
* Doing "sleep 30; reboot" on vt2 and then "startx" on vt1 did not reboot

Other Info:

* T20 has "S3 Savage IX8 8MB" LCD is 1024x768
* autodetected as "Savage/IX-MV"

Strageness I've seen, but you can ignore:

* Install fedora to a working driver that will consistently work twice.
* Install to a dead driver that will consistently hang 5 or 6 times.
* Seen FC5 install do this, once dead, once working.
* Seen Ubuntu install die

Xorg.0.log that crashes
Comment 3 Alex Deucher 2006-09-27 07:39:49 UTC
several options:
1. try disabling the DRI or disabling DMA:
Option "DmaMode" "NONE"
or forcing PCI mode:
Option "BusType" "PCI"

2. try the savage driver from git HEAD
Comment 4 Robert Dowling 2006-09-30 07:24:19 UTC
Hi, sorry I took so long.
Of the three options, disable DRI, disable DMA, force PCI,
the last one, force PCI seems to work.

I need to try it out more.
Comment 5 Robert Barnett 2007-01-27 20:22:19 UTC
This also happens for Fedora Core 5 on a Thinkpad T20
As suggested, Option "BusType" "PCI", fixes the problem.
Comment 6 Alex Deucher 2007-01-27 22:46:42 UTC
You might want to try agp again with the savage drm from git HEAD or a recent kernel.

Sorry about the phenomenal bug spam, guys. Adding xorg-team@ to the QA contact so bugs don't get lost in future.

Bugzilla Upgrade Mass Bug Change

NEEDSINFO state was removed in Bugzilla 3.x, reopening any bugs previously listed as NEEDSINFO.
