The GNOME workspace selector appears fairly useless because the compiz workspaces are treated as one big workspace and sending windows from one to another one is impossible through the applet. Moreover, I used to have 12 workspaces and now I'm forced to 4 ( both cube and rotate plugins are enabled ), while it should keep the GNOME settings. Perhaps the cube plugin should be revised into something "more" than a cube? Maybe providing better integration with wnck-applet (considering people having 2-line workspaces ( and therefore using a more complicated 3D figure, than just a cube, which would be pretty cool ). And I apologise for the abused of the word "workspace" but I actually enjoyed writing it :)
compiz currently implementeds the feature called a "large desktop" and not multiple workspaces like metacity. We're probably going to add support for workspaces as well but a "large desktop" and viewports are what compiz currently support. I know that I've sent libwnck patches to the compiz list that will make the pager support moving of windows between viewports. You're not forced to 4. You can change the /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/hsize option to a greater number if you want that.

Sorry about the phenomenal bug spam, guys. Adding xorg-team@ to the QA contact so bugs don't get lost in future.
Applied in Gnome SVN according to http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=352383, thus closing as fixed.
