When starting the X server, it refuses to place the hostname within the display name. This results in an X server that is unusable over a network. Whatever I do, the display name does not get set to anything other than ':0.0'. It should get set to myhostname:0.0. I am using exactly the same files in /etc/X11/xdm as I previously used with XFree and which worked perfectly. I am running Slackware 10.2 with the dist of xorg that came with the distribution. My network is set up correctly.
The server can't place anything in the DISPLAY environment variable seen by clients, because the X server doesn't exec the clients. It's more likely that your X server is being started with '-nolisten tcp'.
Sorry about the phenomenal bug spam, guys. Adding xorg-team@ to the QA contact so bugs don't get lost in future.
