./configure is broken X11R7.6 (from scratch). libXv is "default" but not in Makefile.in, thus fails, no -lXv so by default it's broken, must be hacked to build, and whoever maintains ./configure is who needs to fix No makefile contains XV or Xv at all, though some files have includes for (no good w/o -lXv) frustratingly, this isn't seen till a lot of building has been done, forcing a long delay
am deleting this apparently had some files missing elsewhere after installed , so must try again
X11R7.6 is now 4 years old, and should no longer be used - it has many bugs and security holes that have been fixed in later releases. X.Org recommends you use current stable releases of each component from http://www.x.org/releases/individual/ instead.
./configure broken X11R7.6 (from scratch). libXv is "default" but not in any Makefile*, fails, no -lXv i first though i was missing Xv.pc, no, ldconfig, dangling symlink on libs, no all ok. i see in Changelog many, who do not own Xv, have been hacking at Xv to "git it out of their way" and assume they have ruined what had been working: Xv in Xfree86 works. it's causing me a few rebuilds i'm unhappy about the hacking of all the Makefile.am and confgiure bull to fix it to get Xorg to build normally: if libXv is avaible, if it's default: don't die due to lack of -lXv alone ie, GL_LIBS has a switch now, but XV has no switch and no -lXv after all the hacking they reported they were doing "in good faith" - it's worse than it was before deletion of what already had been working is not a method anyone can approve of
NO... it's marked to build XV=yes quite clearly in X11R7.6 and fails i'm sure i'll take your word for it i shouldn't use Xv i'm unsure if i ever use it (i still have a stopped build and have to rebuild) wait no. that's ok for possibly a newer base (which i have). i'd rather use what i'm making for two systems if i can. (noting one has Xorg older version) the "just don't use Xv" for my older base (let's see some reverse dependancies) may was well say "never use anything not fully upgraded", but that's never so /var/debdep/doil-avail-root # echo "libxv1" | ./include-rdeps | grep "^x" | head x-window-system x-window-system-core x-window-system-dev xaw3dg-dev xawtv xawtv-tools xbase-clients xdm xfce4 xfce4-mcs-manager-dev you may be right i may be able to get away w/o libXv but i think i'd rather have it just in case ---------------------------- your not saying why the configure and makefiles are damaged because it should be off by default doesn't explain why support is in X11 and it's on by default nor why working support, off by default, should not be left in can you say definitively CERT has dubbed Xv as a virus ?
it's an older release i'm unsure if i should file maybe i should read more rules i do like this new bug report system ! maybe i'll learn how to use it ?
