in Version 0.12.4 PDF Checkboxes are converted (to a $ Sign).

in Version 0.28.1 PDF Checkboxes are not converted anymore.

I fail to see why this is a bug? Pdf checkboxes should be available to you in the Annotations. Look for instance with popppler-glib-demo and see if you can see the checkboxes of your file there.

Save as text in acroread converts the check boxes to:

(checkbox) Unchecked

or 

(checkbox) Checked

We should do something similar instead of outputting a random character like '$'. Another option is to use unicode checkboxes. eg ☐, ☑, and ☒.
